🇧 How to Open a Bank Account in Poland as a Ukrainian (2026)

Think you can open a Polish bank account in 5 minutes online? If you only have a Ukrainian passport, the system may block you at the verification step. Here's how to do it right — depending on your legal status.

Poland is home to over 1.5 million Ukrainians. A bank account is essential — without one you can't receive your salary, pay rent, or access most online services. The process, however, differs significantly based on your legal status.

What Documents You Need

Most Polish banks require three things:

  1. Passport or Ukrainian ID card — valid, no expiry annotations
  2. PESEL number — Poland's 11-digit national identification number (see below how to get one)
  3. Polish address — proof of residence (rental agreement, utility bill, or a statement from your landlord)

How to Get a PESEL

If you don't have a PESEL yet — that's your first step. Without it, most banks will refuse to open an account.

Option 1 — In person at the local council office (Urząd Gminy/Dzielnicy):

  1. Visit your local municipal office (gmina or district office)
  2. Submit the PESEL registration form (available at the office)
  3. Bring: passport + proof of stay or address registration
  4. Processing time: 1–3 working days
  5. Free of charge

Option 2 — Online via obywatel.gov.pl:

  • Visit obywatel.gov.pl
  • Section: "Uzyskaj numer PESEL" (Get a PESEL number)
  • Requires a trusted profile (Profil Zaufany), which can be set up online or at a bank

Two Scenarios — Based on Your Legal Status

The process differs dramatically depending on your legal status in Poland.

🅐 Scenario A: Temporary Protection Holders (PESEL UKR)

If you are in Poland under temporary protection (UKR status), your only option is a personal visit to a bank branch.

  • Banks require physical identity verification and original documents: foreign passport + paper confirmation of PESEL UKR registration.
  • Fully online account opening (via app or website) is not available in this case due to regulatory requirements.

💡 Call the bank before visiting to confirm that the specific branch handles UKR status clients — not all branches are properly trained for this.

🅑 Scenario B: Karta Pobytu (Residence Card) Holders

If you hold a Karta Pobytu, you theoretically have access to faster online account opening methods. However, there is a serious trap that many foreigners encounter.

The "bank-to-bank" verification block

Many banks offer a convenient option: "Open an account online and verify your identity by logging into your existing Polish bank account."

The catch: This method works only if you have a Polish national ID card (dowód osobisty). Before the verification step, the banking system requires you to enter the data of a Polish identity document to automatically check you in state registers.

If you don't have a Polish ID — and you identify with a Ukrainian passport and residence card — the system will block you before reaching the verification step. In that situation, even when applying online, the only option is identity verification by courier or an in-branch visit.

What to do in practice (Karta Pobytu, no Polish ID):

  1. Fill out the online application on the bank's website
  2. When asked for verification method, choose: courier or branch visit
  3. The courier comes to you with documents to sign (free of charge at most banks)

Exception: banks with online form + branch verification (hybrid approach)

Several banks offer hybrid account opening — you start online and finish in person:

  • PKO Bank Polski — fill in the form online; after submitting you receive confirmation and an invitation to the branch for document verification and signing
  • mBank — online form + finalised by courier or branch visit
  • Bank Pekao — online application available; customers with mObywatel / Profil Zaufany app can complete some steps remotely; without mObywatel, a branch visit is required
  • ING Bank Śląski — online form available; finalisation requires branch visit or courier verification

In all cases above: you cannot complete the process 100% online without a Polish ID, but you can conveniently submit the application from home and complete the rest at the branch.
